The YMCA language assessment center provides English and French language assessment for immigrants in Canada. Newcomers should take the free assessment in order to attend the government funded language courses.
The assessments are based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), a national recognized measurement. There are total 12 benchmarks, organized into 3 stages.
Stage I - Basic Language Ability (Benchmarks 1 - 4)
Stage II - Intermediate Language Ability (Benchmarks 5 - 8)
Stage III - Advanced Language Ability (Benchmarks 9 - 12)
An appointment for the assessment must be scheduled in advance. The assessment can take one and a half to four hours for four sections: listing, reading, writing and speaking. Please note that the assessment result is valid for 12 months.
Personal Experience
Before it was valid for 6 months only. I went to take the assessment one week after I arrived in Toronto. At that time, I was not aware that the result was only valid for 6 months. When I wanted to enroll in another course, I was notified that I needed to get assessed again in order to be enrolled. Meanwhile, you may need to wait for one month for your turn to take the assessment because so many immigrants want to take it.
Thus, it is highly suggested to check out the course and assessment schedules in advance. Even though the assessment is free, it is very time-consuming to get assessed again.
