Connection and Networking - Part 5

The language assessment provided at YMCA of Greater Toronto are for attaining government funded English language programs.  These programs include:

1) LINC (Language Instruction to Newcomers to Canada)

2) ESL (English as a Second Language)

3) Higher Level Language Training:

    - ELT (Enhanced Language Training)

    - OSLT (Occupation Specific Language Training)

    - SLT (Specialized Language Training)

Benchmark 7 (intermediate language ability) and above are required in order to get accepted to the higher level language training, for which is related to language level at work.  Some programs require all four sections (listing, reading, writing and speaking) must be at Benchmark 7 and above, whereas some programs only ask for an average level at Benchmark 7 and above. 

The language ability is very important at work.  English and French are the two official language in Canada.  Thus, it is a great advantage if you are bilingual, with both English and French language abilities.  

The Occupation Specific Language courses include several key occupation sectors, in which offer newcomers workplace communication skills and connection opportunities to local employers.  These are good courses helping foreign educated professional newcomers adapt to Canadian work environment.
