One thing is very different from my own home country is that people are polite in Canada but it is not easy to become close friends. Canadians care very about their personal life and privacy. They do not want to be bothered by others even their family members. Everyone is on their own. It is often said that you are responsible of your decisions. They expect that each individual is responsible of their own life. No one would make a decision for you.
In Asian culture, families and friend are having close relationships. You could bring up any of your problems and people around you are very happy to help you out.
But in Canada they do not have time for others and do not want to be bothered. Each person has to be responsible of his/her own life.
When you are new at work, your co-workers would watch and keep a distance from you. They are polite to you but not friendly. They would watch you for a long period of time before accepting you as one of their own.
It is important to be polite at work. You should always ask questions if you do not understand something. No one would know what you do not know from your face. As stated earlier, it is you are responsible for yourself. Time is precious. They are neither used to nor have no time to make a guess.
Although it is usually to be friendly with your co-workers but do not ask any personal and sensitive topics. If a co-worker brings up a topic that you are not comfortable with, you can refuse to answer or change the subject.
