Canadian Workplace Culture - Part 1

In many countries, an orientation or on-job training usually are arranged for new employees, regardless whether they are well experienced or not.  These trainings give updated information and some techniques that would help new employees getting familiar to the assigned job and work environment quickly.

Most of newcomers in Canada would expect the same sort of training when they start working.  In fact, you are lucky if you receive training.  You would be left at a desk with a computer.  They expect you to speak up and raise questions.  People would be happy to help but it is your responsibility to let them know what you need.

This is really related to the soft skill of self-motivated.  In most Asian culture people are humble so it is important to know the Canadian work culture so that newcomers can fit to the positions they are hired for.

Nowadays people are busy everywhere.  Time is money.  Everyone says so.  In Canada time is a commodity.  Everyone is busy with their owns. Time is precious to each one and every one of us.

In many countries it is kind of relaxing.  It is fine to be late at an appointment.  You may be used to this kind of pace. This would be fine in your home countries.

But in Canada you need to be adopted to their culture.  When you are going for an interview, you should arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than scheduled which is considered to be just arriving on time.

Being on time is a courtesy and a way to show your respect to the others in all occasions in Canada.  So start changing your mindset and behavior and act as a Canadians.
