Volunteer - Part 1

Volunteering work can help you to connect with people, obtain Canadian experience and even sometimes lead to land an offer.

Volunteerism is an important in Canadian society.  Many immigrants may resist the idea of working for free.  However newcomers to Canada may find that volunteering is a great way to obtain Canadian experiences and potential references which will help them in their job search.

Most of the non-profit organizations in Canada provide volunteering opportunities or related services. You can check out volunteering opportunities from websites like Volunteer Toronto or Volunteering at YMCA, The City of Toronto for example. Some magazines also provide the volunteering news like NOW Toronto. You need to prepare a resume to apply for a volunteering work.  The organizations will screen the applications and call suitable applicants for interviews.  It is the same recruiting process as those looking for a paid job.

The ideal volunteering work is the one related to your professional skills.  There are newcomers who start volunteer and are offered part-time or full-time jobs as result.  The volunteering work is a key and critical step for newcomers in Canada to connect with their professional communities.
