Connection and Networking - part 3

The YMCA of Greater Toronto was the first organization I visited after I arrived shortly in Toronto.  It is a one-stop shop for newcomers.  Its newcomer program includes -
       - Newcomer Information Center
       - Language Assessment and Referral Center
       - Newcomer Youth Leadership Development

I learned about it before I left for Canada.  It is widely advised that it is better to be well prepared beforehand.  So I spent quite some time searching on Internet and attending information sessions that I came to my notice.

You need to bring with you the immigration documents when you visit them.  You need to fill out application form once there for their records.  The counselor will talk to you about your status and needs, based on that information they provide you with the necessary information and refer you to the specialized newcomer settlement organizations.

Connection and Networking - part 2

Connecting with others is a very important process for settling in Canada.  There are many organizations offer various services to new comers.  New comers can go for help with any issues that they encounter.  These organizations offer advice and assistant to new comers to help them settle down and feel welcome like at home.  Their services are mainly as follows:
- Information center
- Language assessment and class
- Help finding a job
- Help daily issues, eg: finding a place to live, moving

Each organization has different focus and strengths.  It is suggested to collect information and evaluate thoroughly before deciding where to go.  You may need to consider the timing, location and what they can offer to you.  Basically, these organizations all offer similar services.  Most teachers and counselors there are also immigrants who arrived some time ago.  They have been through the same process as all other new comers do.  They are helpful and supportive.
